Guide
For 85 percentile, the latest completed CAT gives a useful anchor, but not a magic number. CAT 2025 result-based analysis places this percentile around 44.2 scaled marks. For CAT 2026 preparation, a practical working band is 45–50 so that your plan is not dependent on one exact paper difficulty.
How much has the target moved?
| CAT year | Approx. score around 85 %ile |
|---|---|
| 2023 | 38 |
| 2024 | 49 |
| 2025 | 44.2 |
That movement is the reason to train for a range. If the paper is tougher, the same percentile may come at fewer marks; if it is easier, the benchmark can rise. Use recent history to set a capability target, not to forecast CAT 2026 to the decimal.
What can the score look like section-wise?
One illustrative balanced split is VARC 21 + DILR 14 + QA 12 = 47. It is not a compulsory combination. A VARC-heavy student can compensate with a stronger verbal score; a student strong in DILR or QA can reach the same total differently. What you should not do is let one section collapse just because the overall arithmetic still looks attractive—many colleges apply sectional thresholds separately.
Attempts matter only with accuracy
| Style | Attempts | Correct | Wrong* | Accuracy | Net score* |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Near-perfect | 16 | 16 | 0 | 100.0% | 48 |
| High accuracy | 17 | 16 | 1 | 94.1% | 47 |
| Balanced | 21 | 17 | 4 | 81.0% | 47 |
| Aggressive | 25 | 18 | 7 | 72.0% | 47 |
*The illustration assumes every wrong answer is an MCQ attracting the usual negative mark. Incorrect TITA/non-MCQ responses do not carry the same −1 penalty. This is why “attempt X questions” is a poor standalone strategy.
What to fix from your current mock score
If you are around 20, first recover the easiest marks: unattempted easy questions, avoidable negatives and one clearly weak section. Around 30, the biggest gains usually come from better selection and converting medium questions rather than expanding the syllabus endlessly. Around 40, review becomes more valuable than volume: two bad MCQ guesses, one wrong DILR set choice or three QA questions selected poorly can explain much of the gap. Once you are repeatedly near the target band, focus on repeatability across mocks, not chasing a higher one-off score.
Use the matching College Discovery percentile page only after looking at your sectionals and profile. A percentile target is useful when it changes your preparation—not when it becomes a number you refresh after every mock.
What this band changes in your preparation
At 85 percentile, the most useful question is not ‘how do I get 99 tomorrow?’ but ‘where are the next 10–15 clean marks?’ Usually they are spread across basic QA gaps, one better DILR set and avoidable VARC option errors.
