CAT DILR Score vs Percentile

A sectional score is useful only when you read it together with year difficulty and your overall CAT plan. In CAT 2025, the DILR section had its own score-to-percentile curve; the marks required for the same sectional percentile have also moved across recent years.

The spread is the important part. It tells you not to build a strategy around a fixed sectional number. Instead, use the latest benchmark as a checkpoint and train with enough buffer that a somewhat easier paper does not immediately push you below your target percentile.

What the numbers mean in practice

DILR is usually decided by set selection before it is decided by calculation. Spend the first few minutes comparing entry points, data clarity and the number of usable constraints before committing.

A sectional score also has a second job: protecting your admission options. An overall score can look healthy while a weak DILR percentile becomes a bottleneck for colleges that use sectional cutoffs. That is why mock analysis should keep two columns: overall contribution and section-floor risk.

How to review DILR after a mock

Do not stop at “I scored 21.” Record what produced the score. Count correct answers, wrong MCQs, unattempted easy questions, time spent on abandoned questions/sets/passages, and whether your best questions were attempted early enough. Then compare those mistakes across the last three mocks. A repeated pattern is a preparation problem; one isolated bad section may just be variance.

Your review should record not only whether you solved a set, but whether you selected it early enough. A correct set solved after wasting ten minutes elsewhere is still a selection problem.

Use the dedicated 90, 95 and 99 percentile pages when you want a more specific score target. The objective is to make your sectional performance stable enough to support the overall target, not to optimise a section in isolation.
