How Many Questions Do You Need for 90 Percentile in CAT?

For 90 percentile, do not start with a target like “attempt 35 questions.” CAT 2025's overall benchmark was around 51–52 marks, and the most reliable way to reach that band is to build a clean scoring floor rather than stretch the paper aggressively.

Guide

For 90 percentile, do not start with a target like “attempt 35 questions.” CAT 2025's overall benchmark was around 51–52 marks, and the most reliable way to reach that band is to build a clean scoring floor rather than stretch the paper aggressively.

Three ways to reach roughly the same score

AttemptsCorrectWrong*Net score*What it means
1918153Very selective, very high accuracy
2219354Balanced approach
2620654Higher coverage, more leakage

*Illustration assumes every wrong answer is an MCQ at −1; wrong TITA responses do not carry that penalty.

The third line is not automatically “better” because it touches more questions. If the extra seven attempts are difficult questions that consume time and create negatives, they can make your section worse.

Where to find the marks

A 90-percentile plan should favour easy and medium conversions across all three sections. In VARC, that means controlling option traps rather than forcing every passage. In DILR, one strong set plus useful questions from another can be more valuable than opening four sets. In QA, a dependable arithmetic/algebra base often creates enough selectable questions to avoid panic.

Use your last three mocks, not someone else's attempt count

Write down four numbers for each mock: easy questions missed, wrong MCQs, time lost on abandoned questions/sets, and the weakest section's score. If easy misses and negatives are high, increase accuracy before attempts. If accuracy is already strong but many approachable questions remain unseen, work on pace and first-pass selection.

For 90 percentile, the goal is controlled coverage. Once you can reach the score band repeatedly without one section collapsing, then increase attempts selectively rather than chasing a fixed total.

A useful next-mock target

Do not demand 52+ immediately if you are currently far below it. Set a smaller target: recover 6 clean marks through two fewer wrong MCQs or two additional correct questions from areas you already know. When that becomes repeatable, add the next block. This staircase approach gives you evidence that the score is moving for a reason rather than because one mock happened to suit you.
