Guide
A sectional score is useful only when you read it together with year difficulty and your overall CAT plan. In CAT 2025, the VARC section had its own score-to-percentile curve; the marks required for the same sectional percentile have also moved across recent years.
Recent VARC score benchmarks
| Percentile | CAT 2023 | CAT 2024 | CAT 2025 | 3-year spread |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 99 | 39 | 41 | 43 | 39–43 |
| 95 | 30 | 30 | 32.5 | 30–32.5 |
| 90 | 23 | 24 | 26 | 23–26 |
| 85 | 20 | 20 | 22 | 20–22 |
| 80 | 17 | 18 | 19 | 17–19 |
The spread is the important part. It tells you not to build a strategy around a fixed sectional number. Instead, use the latest benchmark as a checkpoint and train with enough buffer that a somewhat easier paper does not immediately push you below your target percentile.
What the numbers mean in practice
VARC is not a pure attempt-volume section. A stronger plan is to protect reading quality, choose passages deliberately, and review wrong options by trap type—too broad, too narrow, extreme, reversed or outside the passage.
A sectional score also has a second job: protecting your admission options. An overall score can look healthy while a weak VARC percentile becomes a bottleneck for colleges that use sectional cutoffs. That is why mock analysis should keep two columns: overall contribution and section-floor risk.
How to review VARC after a mock
Do not stop at “I scored 21.” Record what produced the score. Count correct answers, wrong MCQs, unattempted easy questions, time spent on abandoned questions/sets/passages, and whether your best questions were attempted early enough. Then compare those mistakes across the last three mocks. A repeated pattern is a preparation problem; one isolated bad section may just be variance.
If your VARC score is volatile, track passage-level accuracy separately from VA. One bad RC choice can distort the whole section.
Use the dedicated 90, 95 and 99 percentile pages when you want a more specific score target. The objective is to make your sectional performance stable enough to support the overall target, not to optimise a section in isolation.

Why On Your Mocks?
A mock score tells you what happened. OYM helps you understand what went wrong and what to work on next.
