MAT Mock Strategy: How to Use 120 Minutes

A MAT mock should train full-paper management, not just confirm that you know arithmetic and reasoning. With 150 questions in 120 minutes across five equal sections, the analysis needs to show whether your preparation is balanced enough for the actual paper.

A MAT mock should train full-paper management, not just confirm that you know arithmetic and reasoning. With 150 questions in 120 minutes across five equal sections, the analysis needs to show whether your preparation is balanced enough for the actual paper.

Before the mock

Choose a section order and rough time budget. Do not change it because the first five questions feel unusual. Set one explicit experiment—for example, finish Language + Reasoning within a fixed window or cap time on a DI set—and test that one variable.

During the mock

Use a two-pass approach. First collect direct/high-confidence questions across the paper. Then return to medium questions with a visible route. Because MAT uses −0.25 for a wrong answer, do not turn the final minutes into a random-guess sprint.

After the mock: five numbers per section

Record attempts, correct, wrong, questions never seen, and time spent. Then tag the biggest loss: concept gap, direct-knowledge gap, slow calculation, bad puzzle selection, or careless guess. MAT's Economic & Business Environment section deserves its own review—do not bury it inside a generic GK score.

Mock frequency

Early: one diagnostic plus section drills. Once the format is familiar, one full mock every 5–7 days is enough if you analyse it properly. In the final phase, increase only if the prior mock has already produced a concrete change.

A mock is successful when the next mock behaves differently—better section coverage, fewer negatives or a cleaner time split—not merely when the score is higher.

Put this rule into one measurable experiment

In your next MAT mock, change only one behaviour connected to mat mock strategy: how to use 120 minutes. Decide the rule before the timer starts, then record its effect on attempts, accuracy, questions unseen and time lost. Multiple annual administrations and modes; score valid one year; broad B-school acceptance. Economic & Business Environment is distinct from CAT.

If the experiment improves score but creates a new section collapse, it is not yet a usable strategy. Repeat it once on a different paper before locking it. Exam strategy should survive a harder set or unfamiliar question mix; otherwise it is only a lucky mock pattern.
