The XAT pattern matters because it determines how you convert preparation into marks. Only major Indian MBA exam with a dedicated Decision Making section; no sectional time limits; sections can be switched; on-screen scientific calculator; GK does not drive overall percentile but matters to XLRI final selection.

Section structure

SectionQuestions/timeWhat the section rewards
VALR~26RC, critical/analytical reasoning, vocabulary/grammar, para-based reasoning; can include unusual passages/poems/cartoons.
Decision Making21Ethical/business/personal scenarios requiring prioritisation, stakeholder balancing and defensible decisions.
QA-DI28Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, modern math and DI, often with higher reasoning load than speed-only OMETs.
GK20Current/static awareness; does not drive overall percentile but matters to XLRI final selection.

The exam has Approx 95 questions in 180 minutes. Marking is +1 correct; -0.25 incorrect; after 8 unattempted questions, -0.10 for each additional unattempted question in scored Part 1; GK has no negative marking. Those three facts—volume, time and penalty—should shape your attempt plan more than a generic “solve as much as possible” target.

What the pattern changes strategically

Part 1 gives you freedom across VALR, DM and QA-DI, so time allocation is a strategic choice; Part 2 GK is a separate 10-minute block. The skip penalty also means leaving a very large number of Part-1 questions has a cost.

A useful first mock is not about percentile. Write down: time spent per area, unanswered questions, wrong answers, and where the first major time sink occurred. If the paper has no negative marking, unanswered questions become a coverage failure; if it has negative marking, random late guesses can destroy a good attempt. If sections are separately timed, pacing failure cannot be repaired elsewhere.

Build a two-pass plan

In the first pass, take direct questions and sections where the first step is clear. In the second, return to medium questions or sets that need more work. The exact split depends on the exam, but the principle is stable: do not pay premium time for low-confidence marks before collecting cheaper marks.

Finally, practise the actual interface rules—section switching, calculator availability, section timers or OMR/CBT requirements—before exam day. Knowing the syllabus without knowing the paper mechanics is one of the easiest ways to underperform in an OMET.
